Hello all, im trying to get my clothing together for my 2013 pct thru and have some questions.
I already own a patagonia nano puff and a montbell ex lite down jacket. I thru hiked the AT with the nano puff as my insulation layer and was dissapointed by its warmth. Too hot to hike in and not warm enough in camp(even with baselayer, windlayer, and hardshell). So im determined to have and insulation layer that is a warm hug when in camp for this pct hike. I used the ex lite down jacket on a recent fall hike and realized that it would not cut it either. So i feel i am left with two options to choose from.
1) Buy a warmer down jacket in the 8-10 oz range( WM hooded flash, rab ultra down pullover, nunatak, and so on). But i really DO NOT want to spend the money!
2) Take the nano puff and exlite down jacket. What i like about this combo is that they happen so fit perfectly with each other(baselayer exlite then nanopuff fit together like a glove). This combo would also offer a bit more versitility. I really like this combo b/c i already own them($$$) but not liking the weight so much compared with option 1.
If i knew for sure that the nanopuff and exlite down combo would be as warm or pretty close to as warm as a high quality and expensive down jackets like i mentioned in option 1 i would take the weight penalty and save my money.
assuming my other upperbody clothing consists of baselayer windlayer rainlayer…
For those of you responding, tell me what you would do AND try and tell me which option would be warmer and by how much. Dont have the time to test this out myself this winter, thankyou.
Oh and BTW i know i could get by with just the nano puff or just the exlite no prob but this thru hike is going to be comfort while still being pretty darn lite.
