Hiker falls after bee attack

Man,those guys got hammered. The decedent fell 150 feet, apparently while in the midst of the attack and two "other hikers were airlifted out after each was stung about 300 times"…

They hid in some rocks, and were still stung like that. Bad bees. Bad deal.

Sorry for the hiker and family. Not cool at all.

Those are probably the Africanized or "killer" bees that came into Arizona from Mexico in the last few decades. The bad news is the killer bees are found throughout the warmer parts of the Southwest now. The good news is that the killer bees are gradually interbreeding with the less aggressive European honeybees and, hopefully, becoming less of a problem.

Very sad story that could probably happen to anyone hiking in these areas.

I once asked a doctor what would be his suggestion if a solo hiker suffered multiple stings in the backcountry. His 'off the record' advice was to slightly OD (overdose) on Benadryl (2 or 3 more than the normal dose) and get to a hospital as fast as possible.

Any doctors out there that can confirm this–or have other advice?

But the first rule, when you encounter trouble, is not to panic. Panic kills, at least thats what they taught us in diving school.

I had a friend when I was a kid whose dad received a crippling life changing injury when he fell off a ladder. A wasp flew up his shorts while he was painting his house. Because of a single wasp he ended up in a wheelchair. Didnt have to turn out that way.
