Just got my new Olympus E pl-1 and think I will end up with a 9-18 mm lens and eventually a 100-300mm lens. What is the best way to backpack with camera gear? I have thought about a photovest maybe but have no idea what would be best.

Personally, small cam like that, I prefer waist pockets. Besides helps balance the load. Of course if it rains hard gotta put it inside. No biggie. Larger cams I attach the neck cord to the haul loop on backpack or top of stay and either 1 or two clips giving said cam "balance" onto my shoulder straps. It makes taking the pack off slightly slower(1 more thing to unclip), but its not bad. Modified a cuben stuff sack for carrying on shoulder/chest that way. Quite easy to do with a little thread/needle/velcro(access to viewfinder/lenscap)/silicon to WP it. Know your buttons and use through the super thin stuff sack. Without said stuff sack, perspiration will ruin your day as said cam will get drenched from yourself.

PS. I used very lightweight 1/16" nylon cord attaching camera stabilizers to clips and to straps. For a very quick dirty solution, one can use bungie material and in some respects is better as getting the knots at the exact length isn't as painful. For adjustment, obviously I put prussic knots on said stabilizers to slide where I wished.

Enjoy.

In your case I would put in waist pockets on pack. If your pack does not have them, buy or make them. Not very hard to do. For hiking you will never go back to a pack without waist pockets. For mountain climbing, well its not all that useful.
