Calling all DIY gear experts! I want to join two of my Montbell sleeping bags to make a big two person quilt. My plan is to use a #7 on the bottom, and a #3 on top, down to 32F or lower in May.
Problem is, the zippers are non separating at the end. This is the one flaw I wish Montbell would address with the bags. Anyway, any ideas on how I can join these bags?
My tentative ideas;
1. sew strips of velcro to each of the four zipper halves; stick the two bags together. (weak)
2. Buy separating YKK zippers, and sew them inside the existing zipper tracks, to be used only when joining two bags. (heavy)
3. Sew snaps every 6" or so, and snap 'em together (drafty)

Is there any way to convert my non separating zippers to separating type? Just cut the ends off and re-sew?

Sorry, I have 0 MYOG experience in this area.

Thanks in advance.

duct tape! lots of duct tape! ok, so i'm joking. you could cut the teeth off the old zipper and sew a seperating zipper to the material left on the old zipper. I used this trick to replace an old zipper without having to rip the seam out.

Thats one I hadn't thought of. Ill add it to the list of considerations.

The most elegant way to do this, Brett, is to replace the excisting zipper with one that is seperatable. I would let the seamstress do this at store where I bought my SB cause she's much better at doing sth like that than I am, but for my SB it would be worth it.
