I’m 6’2″ and heavy. I used it as an elephant-foot bag, wearing only a Patagonia Micropuff over a wicking synthetic base layer (boxers, not long underwear) that offered almost no insulation. The outside temperature was around freezing and it wasn’t much warmer inside, alone in a single-wall two-person tent. I was warm most of the night, until my arms got a bit cold just before dawn (no fault of the bag–I should have worn my mid-layer). My legs and trunk stayed warm all night, but weren’t toasty in the early morning (losing heat from having my upper body outside the bag didn’t help). I think the +30F comfort rating is accurate; YMMV. The circumference was just right–with my arms out of the bag there was no compression of the down. I put my arms inside just to see, but my chest/arm girth is about 60″ and that flattened the fabric. Most people could fit their arms inside if they so chose.
After my test the bag went to my mom. She is 5’3″ and used it as a full-size bag, also in lows just below freezing, in a breezy tarptent. She was comfortable in it wearing only a base layer, although I think the second night she threw a down vest over it during the night rather than put on a mid-layer. She likes it and I don’t get it back ;(
Western Mountaineering Tamarak 60″ half-bag: 19.1oz + 1.0oz stuff sack (specs here)
Thanks, Doug.
I am 5'5, very slender & considering this bag for it's weight.
Then it should extend above your shoulders just fine, and your shoulders and arms will fit inside even wearing a mid-layer and/or insulating layer if you sleep cold or want to use it in below-freezing temps. My mom is not slender (don't let her read this!) so there's plenty of room.
