I went Office Depot to pick up some supplies and took a gander at the clearance rack. They had some light plastic pencil boxes for fifty cents. They slide open like a drawer and have a snap closure, measure 7.5" x 3" x 1" and hit my scale at 1.2oz. I think it is perfect for tent stakes. I'm always paranoid about the stakes damaging other gear, and they do get dirty. I usually wrap them in a square of scrap Tyvek.

I'd like to find something similar without the drawer, just a simple box with a snap. That would cut the weight by about 30% I think.

I've been REALLY impressed with the ZPacks tent stake sack. 1.43oz cuben fiber is insanely strong.

I keep my Ti stakes a little rounded. They were originally pointy, but all they did was worry me about poking holes into things. I rounded them off and they're functionally identical. Thin Ti pushes in just as well as pointy (if y-stakes can be pushed into the ground, Ti certainly can). The stuff is pretty bomber. Even if I was worried I could make a little tyvek sleeve to slip over the bottom half of the stakes for a tenth or so of an ounce (I don't worry, though).

.1oz, too!

1.25 oz weighs almost as much as my .2oz stakes.

The zpacks sack is what I use and like it a lot, minimal rattles too because of the bungee.

I wouldn't want either the weight or the bulk. I also wonder how well that box would hold up to being squashed or stepped on. I have silnylon stake bags from two different tents, and they work just fine. The only hole I've had is in the stuff sack for one of the tents. I don't think it's from the stakes but rather from the poles–I now carry those outside the tent bag.

I prefer to keep my tent stakes in my pocket when setting up and taking down the tent. Even with fluorescent orange on the stakes, it's easy to lose them! I don't think I could do that with the pencil box, and I'll bet it would crack when I squat down to put in or pick up each stake.

I use Ti stakes with very sharp points, and I store them in an outside pocket of my pack with aquarium tubing caps. Each cap is a 3/4" piece of 1/8" polyethylene tubing. They fit tightly on the tip of each stake, concealing the sharp end, and eight of them strung together with fishing line weigh 4 grams (about 0.15 oz).

i also use the zpacks stake bag.
Never a concern about poking thru it.
It weighs about 0.09 oz. About the weight of 2 rubber bands.

I think the pencil box is too heavy for such a simple duty.

Or, just turn half the stakes one direction, half the other, spread slightly so the points arent sticking out, ,and rubber band together tightly. 0.04 oz.
