Jeff, would it work with this? I've never seen the firefly lantern but was just wondering.Nalgene Canteen 1L

Hmmm… interesting catch Phil. Guyot's wide-mouth accesories work with any bottle that uses threads like Nalgene's wide mouth lexan threads (aka the industry de-facto standard). I presume nalgene uses the same on their wide-mouth canteens as the Guyot splashguard definitely fits.

thanks Phil. looks like im gonna have to try out this lightweight lantern and see how it works….only downfall is the fact it wont stand up. but you could hang it from your shelter pole at night to read or get organized.

I bought one with part of our REI dividend. It is a cool piece of weight ;-) I have it on a light blue Nalgene bottle. Testing it out tomorrow!

Jeff, actually, a Nalgene canteen will stand up when full of water. Mine is standing next to my pile of stuff waiting to go in the pack for the weekend.

I use Aqua Mira for water treatment and have found that I really like carrying 1 wide mouthed canteen for water treatment. Collecting water in my pot, I pour it through a coffee filter into the canteen. From there, I can pour into a Platy if I like.

If you used the Nalgene canteen as a lantern, that's another use. Sounds like a cool idea.

Thanks for the info on it standing Phil. I am just getting back into backpacking since my boyscout days and man have things changed. I really am glad I found this site before i started purchasing gear. I have been camping all these years as much as possible just not hiking so my gear choices are obviously alot different. Trying to find as much multi-use gear as possible.

Sarah, I am very interested to here how it performs for you. Please keep us posted

For me, it was a no brainer in getting it. Why? Even though I know Nalegene's are not lightweight by ANY means, I have gone back to carrying one after all these years. I am having so much dental work done it is uncomfortable to drink out of bladders, and last summer my Snapple bottles got a funk-y odor after 5 days. Not sure if it was the bottle, the Aquamira, or a combo of them. Needless to say, my water was gross tasting. So I ended up going back to 1 Nalgene. Usually my other bottle is a normal water bottle from the store that I buy on the way there. I carry a bladder for camp use.
Anyhoo, I often read in my tent for hours, and wearing a head lamp is not comfortable to use (I like laying on my stomach) and neither is using a headlamp easy when changing clothing in the tent. So hence, I thought: This can sit there and light up my tent. And use it outside in the evening, by hanging it.
Sure, it is extra weight, but my pack is light enough at this point ;-)
I'll call it my luxury item!

But then again, you might hear me cursing after this weekend ;-) So far though, using it at home, the light is diffused and not harsh. I like that!

Gear report:
It worked about how I figured it would. As a light for walking, no, this DOES NOT work! It is too highly diffused.
But for in your tent? It works great. Going thru the water it is a soft, gentle light. It lights up your tent, but isn't harsh. I could see everything in my tent last night, but never had night blindness. The blue color of my bottle helped, it colored the water. One thing I hate about most LED's is how harsh the light is.
I have a feeling my son is going to love it for when he is in the tent before me.
