Hyalite CC Foam Pad

The online picture isn't very good- does it have any texture at all? I guess looking at it I'd have to wonder if it's any better than the basic CCF pad Wal-Mart sells. And I'm a Hyalite/Peak Outdoors fan- I have their Peak Elite AC inflatable as my primary pad.

Hyalite is notorious for R-values that are completely out of whack with the rest of the industry and with the way BPL measures R-values. They may be comfortable, but don't believe the R Values–there isn't a foam pad on the market that can do what they claim theirs does.

That being said, they have some great and very comfortable pads around. I don't know from experience what the CC foam pad is like, but it's certainly disappointing that there's so much weight variation that you've got a pad that ways 2+ ounces more than advertised.

No, it doesn't have much texture to speak of. I've never used a WalMart blue foam pad so I can't make a direct comparison. The foam is quite different than REI's blue foam pad, however.

Regarding its claimed R-value, I have no way of measuring it. I figure that even if it is really only around 3.5 then it is still a decent performer. If I stay warm this winter, then it will have been a good purchase. If I get cold from the mat, then perhaps I'll look at other options.

Can I ask what you are using on top of it (your three season pad)? Also, I think I would prefer lawsons for the extra width. I currently use a 20" wide z-lite under my 3 season pad for snow camping, and things get cold in a hurry when a knee or an elbow drops off the side!

I emailed them about the Rvalue of the CCF – it doesnt make sense – if you look at ALL THE OTHER ccf pads out there and divide Rvalue by thickness this one has a way higher claimed value…and i dont believe it.

I also wrote to their customer support about this and got ziltch

For 3 season, I use an XS Thermarest Prolite (R-value of 2.2) and then a foam sit pad under my legs/feet. I use a quilt and have been down to around 30 degrees with no problem, but I do try to seek out naturally well padded and insulated sites.

The 20" width is a concern. I may end up ordering Lawson's pad just to get the extra width and hope that it will be warm enough. Any thoughts?

I heard back from backcountryedge.com and they said that a pad they pulled weighs 15.2 oz in the plastic packaging. I may do an exchange (they have free return shipping) or simply go with Lawson's pad.
