For an alcohol stove what is the best environmentally friendly liquid to burn both for its creation and what it puts off when it burns? I know there are a range of things that can be burned like denatured alcohol, isopropyl, etc but I am looking for what might be the cleanest liquid besides pure ethanol. Thanks.

Pure ethanol used in a lab is the best, but it is very difficult to get legally. Everclear 190 proof is much easier to buy in many states, but not in others. That 5% water doesn't have too much effect on the burn. Rum 151 proof is easier yet.
Denatured alcohol is much cheaper, but there are several different brands and grades, and each has its own poisons to prevent drinking. It's cheaper since there is no liquor tax.
You could build your own moonshine still and make your own custom fuel.

Sep 30, 2012 at 4:38 pm #1916955Read Roger Caffin's BPL article on alcohol burning stoves; in it he states that "it (rubbing Alcohol) is not very volatile and makes a poor (and smoky) fuel. It is not worth the effort." In addition it has a high water content (hence the smoke) that significantly lowers the caloric output. I prefer Klean-Strip's Green Label denatured alcohol as it has a lower percentage of methanol than their regular brand. Here's a reprise of a review I posted sometime back:
This review isn't about an actual alcohol stove, but rather about the fuel that all these stoves use. For the vast majority of the alcohol fuel enthusiasts the fuel of choice has been a denatured alcohol such as Klean-Stip's S-L-X brand. However, as Roger C. points out in his series on stoves, the caloric output of denatured alcohol is rather disappointing because it is actually a mixture of ethanol and methanol (about 50/50 according to the MSDS). It is the ethanol that provides the highest heat output, but the effect is dampened by the large amount of menthanol. Buying pure ethanol is prohibitively expensive and illegal in some states.
Recently I came across a type of denatured alcohol that is 90 – 100% ethanol and less than 10% methanol: Kleen-Strip Green! It's marketed as 95% natural and renewable content and biodegradable. And looking at the MSDS it has fewer additives, so one could assume a less toxic fume. The cost is also less than S-L-X by about a buck-and-a-half for 32oz, which is just fine by me!
But to the nitty gritty. I tested the two types of denatured alcohol using my mini Caldera Cone, a BPL 550 Ti pot, and the Trail Designs burner that goes with the set-up. Using 14ml of the S-L-X I brought 2 cups of 65F water to a vigorous bubble formation before flame out at 6 min. 40 sec. The same set-up using the Green DA resulted in a vigorous, roiling boil in 6 minutes…in fact it blew the lid right off! And it hadn't even flamed out.
In conclusion I ascertained that this new type of DA is cleaner burning, has more heat output and requires less fuel to achieve a roiling boil. It is superior to SLX type DA and HEET (the latter is about 99% methanol and thus has a very low heat value). I gave it a 4 rating because even though it is "greener" it still has some additives.
Sep 30, 2012 at 4:48 pm #1916958Monty, the ISO-Clean stove is not "normal" and has been designed to burn rubbing alcohol efficiently, without the smoke and the soot. Check them out…they are pretty cool. I have used 70% rubbing alcohol in mine and it works…
Oct 1, 2012 at 7:04 am #1917096Well, Everclear 190 or other grain alcohols of about the same nature costs about about $0.36 an ounce while the Kleen Strip Green is about $0.07. I mainly use this as backup for my wood stove so I will have to decide which way I want to go.
The IPA stuff is nice but I made one of the cat stoves up on Skurka's site and feel that will do me well for awhile. I didn't like the fact that burning the IPA was making some people sick.
The roommate actually has some 196 proof stuff from Poland so might just swap that stuff out today as she bought it months ago and has never touched the stuff yet.
