I stumbled across these gaiters in the clearance section at our local shop. They are designed to go with a particular North Face shoe (the Scree, I guess?). They immediately drew my attention because they are very short, light and breathable. My feet still get overheated with the typical short stretch gaiters.
They require a bit of modification to work with normal trail running shoes. They come with four hooks that hold them down on the North Face Scree shoe. Two of the clips have to be removed and replaced with an underfoot cord. This can be done easily with the existing loops and any sort of cord. I used some cord I had lying around and the style of shock cord lock that comes with Keen sandals.
I picked up a couple sets, as they were only $5. The set in the photos are still brand new.

I've been out with them a few times so far. Drastic improvement over the OR stretch gaiters I've been using. These are much more breathable, and still very effective at keeping debris out of my shoes. I've done a bunch of off trail travel with them, and they have held up just fine in choss, scree and bushwacking.
