Thanks for your input Doug. I will be springing for another pack soon but the price almost certainly will exclude this one from serious consideration… but I would like to see your photos of it on the trail.

Hola John,

I just returned from a 7 day trip on the Lost Coast. I carried 3 of the "old" extra large cylinders. I carried my Thermarest Prolite 3 (Womens) wrapped around my Garcia Bear Cannister, ditty bag and toilet bag, in the bottom cylinder. The middle cylinder carried my North Face Beeline bag, clothes bag, Evolution 2P, Tyvek Ground sheet and Tent poles and stakes. The top bag carried snacks, Mont Bell Thermawrap jacket and pants, Integral Designs Rain shell and pants, and an MSR Dromolite 4 liter bladder. Total weight was about 32 pounds.

It was seriously overcast and raining/foggy for the first three days but the remainder of the trip was clear and sunny. We had a bear in camp on Tuesday night but the rest of the trip all we saw were seagulls, Pelicans, one squirrel, one gopher snake and one black crab.

Dennis-

do the ends of the cylinders extend out too much to the sides, getting in the way of arm movement?

Donna,
I typically use the extra large cylinders with my LuxuryLite pack. Since 2005 I've also been using Bruce's "Trail Sticks" treking poles. I've never noticed any difficulty in swinging my arms in all of the various uphill, downhill, sidehill configurations that I've hiked.

Also, I've noticed some comments regarding the hook not being suitable for off-trail use. On the 7 day Lost Coast hike, which I completed yesterday, we bushwhacked several miles over steep rugged terrain and along a narrow, rocky canyon, with many stream crossings and deadfalls to negotiate. The hook never gave me a bit of trouble.
