Has anyone else tried to store their WM bag by hanging it up? I've heard this is the best way to store it, but when I try to hang it by the little "made in the usa" tag at the bottom, it seems to really pull on the fabric and doesn't look like it's good for the bag at all. I can hang it by it's hood, but was just wondering if this even really matters that much as opposed to leaving it layed out on the floor? Thanks!

I actually purchased hangers from Western Mountaineering when they had a shop in Santa Clara CA. They were around $35 and they fit in the footbox and your bag hangs upside down. Of course your bag has to have a full length zipper to accomdate this. This is my favorite way to store my bags!

Ken is right. You would want to use a hanger of some type rather than one or two points on the outer shell. Im sure one could be made pretty in expensively.

When I had room I hung all my bags. I made hangers that fit the inside curve of the hood and loosly wrapped a sheet of light weight cotton cloth around them to keep the dust off (I've got parrots and the dander is ferocious)

What is the advantage to hanging a sleeping bag rather than storing it in the oversized bag they send when you purchase a WM bag?

If not using the cotton storage bag I'll hang it over a drapery hanger. They're big and come with a nice cardboard roll. Not as compression free as a vertical hang, but I don't have giraffe closets!

I should mention an Ultralite will do this, but a Dakota won't easily–too poofy.

Tom,

If you hang your bag there's no compression at all. Also if you should happen (shame on you if you do) to put your bag away before it's completely dry, air can circulate all around a hung bag.

We all know not to store a sleeping bag inside a stuff sack.

That aside, methinks that the advantage of hanging a bag versus laying it flat versus storing it inside the large cotton sack that's provided — is theoretical rather than meaningful (i.e. making any noticeable difference).

If anyone has a real world experience where his or her bag was utterly ruined because it was stored in its cotton sack rather than spread out flat or hung up high — please tell us! But I expect that under all three methods, you will find very happy owners who have kept their bags in great condition for years.

The only critical things to watch out for are:

1. Make sure your bag is clean and thoroughly dry before storing. Then store it in a cool and dry place.
2. Never store a bag inside a stuff sack.

Does WM still sell these hangers? Didn't see any on their website. Can you tell me what they look like? I might could build something that would work if I knew. Thanks.

The sleeping bag hanger they use at stores are usually made completely of wire.hangers
The one on the left is the wire type in stores. The one on the right is one that could be made from a disk of plywood or some thing similar and wire perhaps 3/16" or 1/4" diameter.

I've had a down bag that has been hanging for a few years, and a couple of down bags that have been stored in the cotton sacks for a couple of years. I have noticed no appreciable difference in the bags as a result of how they are stored.
