Which size clamcleat?

I use the smallest size clamcleat on my winter tent – and that has to take some extreme weather. I get them from the manufacturer in the UK.

You can damage a clamcleat by letting the string run through under tension. Basically, the string can melt the plastic by friction. You can also damage a clamcleat by massive overload, but you would never get those forces on a tent – the tent would rip first. But I have never seen any damage under normal use.

Conclusion: I do like them.

I guess based on what Roger said I'm just as well off getting the smallest cleat.

I found that the 2 mini clamcleats I used on my Scarp side guylines ( 2mm ) had worn as Roger described and now slipped under fairly low tension.
This with normal use – not abuse- just 18 months of occasional use ( admittedly including a very windy 2 week trip in Scottish Hills and a very buffeted night high in the Lakes)

I replaced this particular pair of cleats. Will check the new ones during/after this winter.
