Hello folks.

I just joined tonight, and I am looking for a good trail for a trip in Oct or Nov of 2012 in the mountains of Va. Well, actually I wish it was that simple. If it was, I could easily just pick a spot along the AT and go!

Problem is, we will only be taking one car(mine), and therefore we wont have a second car to park at or near our finishing point so we can just drive away when we reach trail's end.

So it appears we need a loop trail to backpack through so we dont have to choose a trail, and later backtrack the same trail(although that may be what we are stuck with). What I would prefer is a good loop so we dont cover the same area twice.

We will be backpacking for parts of 3 days. We will drive over on day 1, hike several miles to camp #1, then the next day will be a long, full day of hiking, til we reach camp #2, then on day #3, we will hike out for several miles and reach the car.

So I would prefer a route that is around 20-27 miles, give or take, and a moderate difficulty trail would be best, because my partner hasnt done too much backpacking. So we dont want to be going up and down mountains the whole time, although obviously elevation gain and loss is inevitable, I just dont want to be traveling from the lower valleys to the peaks over and over…. Ridge run would be fantastic!

We'd like to be in the area of middle to northern Shenandoah natl park, and a trail that spends at least a little time on the AT would be great!

I hope this isnt too tall of an order, and I wish my partner wasnt so worried about leaving her car somewhere for 3 days! If she wasnt this would be much easier! But I'm lucky to have talked her into it at all, so I'm not going to push it!

But maybe there is some other way to deal with this problem without needing 2 cars, but I cant figure it out, and I think hiring a taxi is probably out!

Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated, Thanks

Park at Grindstone Campground and make a clockwise loop from there, mostly on AT. Route is pretty obvious if you get a map. Best 2 night loop in VA IMO.

Plenty of people offer shuttle services along the AT in Virginia. You could park in Damascus and get a shuttle ~30 miles north to Massey Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park and walk back. Great section. Or do the loop with the AT and either the Pine Mountain Trail (short loop) or the Iron Mountain Trail (longer loop), parking in the state park or Grindstone CG as mentioned above.

Where are you in VA? Plenty of good hikes out there.

I dont live in Va, I live in Eastern MD. How much do shuttles charge to drop you off somewhere? That, if reasonably priced, would be ideal.

The other option, which I'm sure is often used, is to just go ahead and hike from point A to point B along the AT, then end up at a parking lot, and find someone who is heading back the same way you just hiked from, and offer them $20 for a ride, but you know how Murphy's law works, luck would have it that nobody would agree to giving a ride, then we'd be stuck 25 miles from our car!

Rockfish Gap Outfitters in Waynesboro offers shuttle service in Shenandoah Park. You can also do what I do and combine some of the park's circuit hike trails that connect with the AT and give yourself as long or as short a hike that you want. There are shelters along the way if you want to go that route..which I personally hate to use. Get a map that covers the area which shows the loop trails or pick up the small pocket size booklet with the trails, broken down into sections of the park.

But the favorite is what Robert suggested…Mt Rogers area. I did that hike several years ago and the shuttle service from the outfitters charged me $50. I think they charge a few bucks a mile. Not sure now with the price of gas so high.

Bradley,

I've been shuttled to and from trail heads many times. On my last trip to VA the going rate was $1.00 per mile traveled.

As I remember it the shuttle rate was per mile not per hiker being shuttled. So if you were shuttled 30 miles and there were two hikers being shuttled the cost per hiker would be $15.00 each.

The best and most appreciated shuttle ride that I ever had was when two USFS workers picked up and shuttled "Lazarus" and I into town from the end of our hike for free. They wouldn't take anything but a handshake and told us that they just wish that there were more of us hiking the trails. Outstanding folks those USFS workers!

I hope the price I quoted is current, gas prices and such.

Party On,

Newton
