On a recent 6 night backpacking trip I carried 9 lbs of food (1.5 lbs per night). I saved all the wrappings and weighed them when I got home. It came to 4.2 ounces of wrappers and plastic bags plus .4 ounces of rubber bands holding everything together.

How does this 3/4 ounce (roughly) of packaging per night out compare to your experience.

    1.2lbs of Food/person/10 days

NOTE: All food was repackaged to a high degree as no resupply was used.

That seems pretty close to what I use but since I usually burn plastic every couple of days I have never weighed all of it upon getting home.

    Ken,

Thanks for the info. Looks like our numbers are comparable.

Now I'm laughing to think of others' response to this correspondence.

Their response to my post might be "Gee, I doubt that anyone else has even looked at this question or cares."

Then you quickly respond with comparable stats that might lead others to think "Who are these guys and what planet did they come from?"

Anyway, thanks for the info. It is helpful. If I had taken 1.2 lbs per day (like you) for my six night trip I could have shaved off a couple of pounds from my starting weight.

    Daryl
