Could anyone help me out with this or show me how I could determine this myself?

ive heard various rumours that you an "determine" insulation with ice cubes ;)

but at the end of the day its fairly irrelevant for base layers when active. if you want warmth when not active get a dedicated insulation layer …

I feel warmer when I put on the Montbell layers than I do with the cap 3 when I put it on. I'm not sure if it is because the Montbell items provide more insulation, or if it is because the Montbell layers have an inner surface that just makes me feel warm as it is put on. I think for me, it is the inner surface texture of the Montbell that gives me the impression of greater warmth. I find the cap 3 layers work well also, and cap 3 is my cold weather sleep layer.

Extend your comparison to Cabela's ECWCS, Under Armor, MTP and HCL longies of various weights.
