Just to inspire some more families to get outside or help lighten the load for the ones that are:
We have an almost 5 and almost 2 year old and started backpacking with them last year.
Until now we used a unzipped rectangular down bag for my wife and oldest, a single down mummy bag for me and a SweetyPie doubler as a toddler bag. Often the toddler needs to be comforted and ends up snuggling up to one of us also.
I just got 2 quilts with a mild taper and 56" top width (RevelationX Wide). Now we will each take a child, they are plenty wide to share that way.

I started out thinking I needed a two person quilt or something like that, but if the adults are not too huge, a regular kinda-widish bag will be enough. It is only about 5" narrower at the top than the rectangular bag we were using.

That way you can still use it as a single adult without it being crazy heavy, making it a more affordable system too.
We save over 3 pounds of sleeping bag, as well as enough volume for me to be able to switch to a much lighter (but smaller) backpack.
