Just to inspire some more families to get outside or help lighten the load for the ones that are:

We have an almost 5 and almost 2 year old and started backpacking with them last year.
Until now we used a unzipped rectangular down bag for my wife and oldest, a single down mummy bag for me and a SweetyPie doubler as a toddler bag. Often the toddler needs to be comforted and ends up snuggling up to one of us also.

I just got 2 quilts with a mild taper and 56" top width (RevelationX Wide). Now we will each take a child, they are plenty wide to share that way.

Snuggle time

I started out thinking I needed a two person quilt or something like that, but if the adults are not too huge, a regular kinda-widish bag will be enough. It is only about 5" narrower at the top than the rectangular bag we were using.

COMPARE WIDTH
That way you can still use it as a single adult without it being crazy heavy, making it a more affordable system too.

We save over 3 pounds of sleeping bag, as well as enough volume for me to be able to switch to a much lighter (but smaller) backpack.

Last year I upgraded from a narrower Golite Ultra20 to a RevelationX wide for this same reason. The Revelation is warmer and wider than my previous quilt. The added benefit is that I can drape the quilt over my sons bag to add warmth without adding weight to our kit and extend the temp range for his bag.

We went on a family backpack last night and used our 2 RevX Wide quilts, one for each of us to use with a child. We had plenty of width to seal out drafts even with two people sharing, and the footboxes seemed to work out well with just the adults feet in them.

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing! I have 2 younger kids, a 10 year old son, and a 7 year old daughter (about to be 11 & 8). They each have a NF Tigger bag. However, my daughter is not much on the hiking thing… I am going to have to get her into it eventually though. Eventually, I would like to get my son one of Tim's quilts of his own… Anyway, I have one of Tim's wide quilts, and they are great when it comes to width…I love it!

Just curious, which pad do you use to sleep 2 people on?

I was about to come back and edit my posting and get into some more detail.

We have Enlightened Equipment Revelation X quilts, 40 degree with overstuff, a 6', wide for my wife and a 6'6" wide for me. we zipped up the footboxes but left the rest of the quilt loose.

We used Neoairs tied together. I made two '8''s of cord with one pad in each loop of the '8', on cord at the top, one near the bottom. This worked great. The extra width also helped combat drafts, even with less width available.

I used a regular, my wife used a womens Xlite, my oldest a 61 cut-down, my youngest a size S.

I should note, our girls are young, 2 and 5, but very tall for their age. They also love to snuggle in with us anyway, so this was also a case of 'if you can't beat them, join them'.

Last night lows were around 40 F, and we all wore warm clothes. (a size S Montbell Thermawrap parka for my 5 yr old, long in the sleeves but fine in the width).

I don't think I'd want to use this system for truly freezing conditions, as there will always be a fair bit of draft, but for temps down to about 30 in a tent, it worked like a charm.

Here are some pictures of the Enlightened Equipment Revelation X wide being used by one adult and one child. 40F, in a Hex3 with net inner.

This saved us a ton of weight on a recent overnight in nice weather. Saving so much weight and volume in the sleeping bags (compared to our old set up), let me take my Mtnsmith Spectr pack instead of my LA Alpamayo 90, which is 55 oz lighter! In total I saved 100 oz! That's over 6 pounds!

I slept with my two year old.

My wife slept under the other quilt with our 5 yr old.

Hello

I've been reading this forum for a while to find out a light sleeping system for our family with 2 kids (4y, 1y).
I was also set on 2 wide RevelationX quilts until I read about your SweetiePie.

My kids move a lot while sleeping and I doubt if they're ready for a quilt yet.
I'm now thinking about the idea of taking 2 mummy sleeping bags and ad a MYOG SweetyPie to each of it.
The MYOG SweetiePie would only be of very light fabric, maybe Pertex Quantum, and use the whole thing reversed – Pertex on the bottom, sleeping bag as a cover on top. I hope you understand what I mean since English is not my first language.
The hood of the mummy could be used as additional cover for the taller person.

A semirec bag like a MityLite would probably be better but here in Europe they sell mostly mummies.
And we get a good deal of high quality bags from Cumulus that doesn't cost you an arm and leg.

What do you think of this idea?
Or should I just go for Tims quilts?
