I have recently bought a down quilt and I hike the AT. I usually stick to huts. Will I need a bivy for my quilt? This has likely been covered before, but I can't find where. If nothing else, could someone direct me to a relevant post?

Need? Probably not, especially if you have other bug protection. I generally do not. I usually carry a head net in case bugs get heavy. Especially in AT shelters, seems unnecessary.
Not a "need." The big "want" would be to keep creepy crawlies from cuddling up with you at night.
A bug bivy might be nice.
If you have good coverage shelter, you won't need a bivy to keep your quilt dry.
There are heavy rains during the early part of the year, which can get pretty violent. But generally you'll have enough sun time during most days to dry it out, even if it gets a bit wet from a strong thunderstorm.
The positives are obvious, thats why I got my own bivy, the only downsides I've had are:
* Don't get one without a face mask frame. Mine didn't have one and I got bitten like crazy on my forehead by mosquitos
* Mice.. they'll just run right on top of you
* Cat.. yes I was bike touring in a neighborhood .. and I had a kitten snuggle on to me and I didn't know what it was so I PUNCHED it off of me.. but it just came back and snuggled me all night long.
* Colder, yes colder. The cold fabric touching my bag is cold.
