For the last couple years I've been using GG carbon fiber poles (LT2s and LT4s). Unfortunately I've had two separate breaks this summer and I've lost faith in them. I broke a lower section on the JMT earlier this summer when it was not in active use, I returned to them and found it broken on the ground. Not sure what happened but I assume I must have unknowingly stepped on it. I replaced the lower section and continued to use them but had the upper section of one of the poles break in normal use, nothing exceptional it just snapped. I contacted GG and their response was "Nicks and Cuts to a pole can cause a weak point. This will eventually cause failure. This nicks or cuts can come from Trail usage, loading and unloading them in the car, and a variety of other reasons." Neither my recent experience nor the GG response inspired confidence and I've decided to move back to metal poles since I use them for both hiking and tarp poles. Unfortunately my experience with metal poles was with old Leki ones and they feel like I'm trying to drag a '74 Buick. Can anyone recommend a relatively lightweight set of metal poles? I recognize that they will weigh more than the LT4 ones from GG but I'd like to keep them around 12oz for the set and adjustable. Any advise is appreciated.
