I just did the update from Garmin and now I can't create a custom route. It is defaulting to "along-road" routing method so my 12 mile route becomes a 2 hour drive….. :/ NOT impressed…..

if anyone has a solution, please post it…. if not, DO NOT DO THE UPDATE until this is addressed!

Good to know as I was just about to update my Garmin Colorado this week.

Thanks for saving me frustration later this month on the Ruby Crest Trail in northern Nevada.

I recently picked up a garmin and had this exact problem. I have been addressing it by going to the dropdown menu in the upper right in basecamp and setting it to direct route. Where the hiking setting wants to put me on a road, direct route seems to follow the waypoints I create. It's pretty frustrating. I made a new activity called "real hiking" which is essentially just a mask of the direct route, which is serving me okay. But if anyone else has better solution, I would be interested.

edited for clarity and grammar.

Thank you! The direct route option works. Makes little sense they have every single option routing you on roads with. No way to disable. I'm sure they will update it again and resolve the issue…… either way, I wanted to throw my laptop for 2-3 hours while trying to figure it out!

the 5.30 update for the handheld (dakota 20). also caused numerous issues. it began to boot, then would just power off. I assumed the batteries were dead….. so right before my trip, I popped in a new set, same thing…… after several hours of research, I was able to start the device in mass storage mode and manually delete the update file, and manually install it. after several attempts, i was able to get it to start, but if I shut it down, i would have to pull a battery to get it to turn back on. now the maps no longer work…… I'm going to reformat memory card as step 1. and try and reinstall….. however the device still will no longer be recognized by the computer unless it is in mass storage mode.

Bottom line, DO NOT update your device firmware…. unless i seem to be an anomoly here. Has anyone been able to complete this update without issue? I found a host of the same complaints in numerous forums worldwide and hence have been able to get this far…. i'm hoping i can get this fixed for good soon. NOT what I wanted to do returning from my overnight…..
