I will be going on a roadtrip across the country with a friend this October. We will be car camping, back country camping, staying on couches with friends and family, and staying at hostels.
Our basic travel plan involves leaving NY in October, then cleveland, Chicago, Boulder co, Jackson hole wy, salt lake city, yellowstone, Seattle, Portland, all over cali, then Vegas, grand canyon, new orleans, Austin, Florida keys, Nashville tn, and then home again.
I want a versatile bottom insulation system – we each have a 20 degree down bag (i opted for a revelation x quilt, he's got a WM down bag iirc) and also a 0 degree synthetic bag each as a safety net.
I'm looking at going with a two stage approach, first a large foam pad – the exped multi-mat in particular, will give me plenty of space to sprawl out on warm nights, and can fold over for extra r value – single layer r1.2, or I already have an GG thinlight wide pad 60×30, with slightly thicker foam. I also have 4 sections of thermarest z-lite pad as a sit pad that can join my bottom insulation.
Next is my air pad. I currently have only a BA clearview pad. I don't like the mummy profile, I like to move in my sleep.
I'm currently looking at the klymit inertia x frame x-lite. 6oz and offers extra torso padding, but no real increase on R value, though I could pack some of the voids with extra clothes.
I guess to sum it up, I need airpad suggestions. I'm wary of going neoair due to durability problems, but the xtherm is so impressive on stated r value. I also don't really like the mummy shape. My revelation x quilt is about 24 oz, and I was planning on budgeting that same weight for bottom insulation, between the foam pad and air pad.
