Ladies, I'd like some advice about layers below the waist. On a 6 day backpack in Mt. Rainier National Park, I was very happy with how my upper body layers worked, but not for my legs. It was not at all hot, but it was humid, and wearing REI Sahara convertible pants (nylon?), with synthetic underpants, and ended up with, well, let's just say it's irritating front and back.
I saw some ladies hiking in skirts +/- tights or long johns, and while I hate skirts in my regular daily life, I got to say it did look much more comfortable and airy for hiking. But what about chafing? I use the pockets in my pants–can you find skirts with adequate pockets? What brands do you prefer?
Shorts or skirts with long johns are another common look, but I wear my long johns in my sleeping bag. What about the trail dust? Don't want that in my bag. Separate long johns for trail and sleeping?
I should preface this discussion with the information that I'm a "full-figured" lady, so advice from others would be great.
