Looking for some advice on a new pair of trail runners.

I recently bought a pair of the Brooks Adrenaline GTX trail runners for use hiking in the Whites, the Greens, and the Adirondacks. They are fairly lightweight (12.7 oz) and very waterproof (Gore Tex).

HOWEVER, after about 100-150 miles of hiking, they're falling apart. The toes are coming apart at the seams, and the tread is falling off of the shoes in large chunks. It's a complete disaster, so I'm returning them to EMS tomorrow afternoon.

The long story short is, I need a new pair of trail runners. Contrary to most opinions I've seen here, I prefer waterproof because of the nature of hiking in an area which is often wet and muddy. I never had an issue with breathability in the shoes which fell apart, and only barely noticed my feet getting sweaty after a long 20+ mile day at the end of my last trip (climbed West Bond, Guyot, South Twin, Galehead, Garfield, Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, and Liberty). However, they did get smelly.

It's probably possible to convince me that I should prefer breathability, but I've heard the arguments and breathability was not the issue that's getting me to replace these shoes. Perhaps the difference here is that I've always made a habit of taking my shoes and socks off on mountaintops to air out–air is my chief method of blister care, and has so far been 100% effective.

Ideally I would find a new pair of shoes that I can exchange at the store tomorrow, because I've got to go hiking with my college orientation program starting Thursday. I've got a pair of backup boots which are broken in and served well on the Long Trail (although they are neither waterproof nor very breathable).

Seeing as how I can't possibly know what's in stock at EMS in your size, all I can advise is to get the shoes that fit you best.

Sorry that wasn't clear. I'm obviously not expecting anyone to recommend something off the shelf. I was more looking for some advice in terms of what to look for tomorrow, so I don't end up with another pair that falls apart as soon as it gets on real terrain. This is coming from someone who is aware of the issues with waterproof shoes, but has tried a pair and not been very sweaty.

Here's some more general info about me:
– I'm 160 lbs with a 6-8 lb BPW
– My feet are fairly narrow and have never had sizing issues
– Need shoes that will be durable in rough and steep terrain

Check out Salomons. Durable shoes well suited to hiking. I used to like that brand before switching to lighter, more flexible running shoes for hiking.

Hey Nick, if you are going to go the waterproof route with trail runners, keep in mind that there is a gaping hole at the top of the shoe where water can go in. I would highly recommend some waterproof or water resistant gaiters to keep splashes and rain out. Also, if you wear regular pants and let them get wet with rain, the water could run through, down your legs, and into your shoes. So some rain pants would be a must. Just my suggestions.

+1 on Solomons. I have XA Comp 5's you might find on the clearance rack at EMS (that is where i got mine) they survived my LT hike and feel even better on NH granite in terms of grip.

I used 4 pairs of Salomon XA Pro 3D Mesh Ultra Trail Runners (they make a GTX version in Black also) for all 2,181 miles of the A.T last year, and used yet another pair for the 230 miles of the New England Trail, and using them again in 2 weeks for the 173 miles of the LT that I want to finish. Got around 400 to 900 miles per pair depending on terrain.

I've had a number of pairs of Asics that have held up well to backpacking and hiking use.
