Hi,

While I'm not inclined to take a lantern with me while backpacking, I'd like to buy something easy to use and compact for car camping. The fact that I can use the same gas canister as my stove is attractive.

I guess the standard to compare against are the coleman lanterns. I wonder how bright the primus is compared to a two mantle coleman lantern. The marketing info on the primus says that it's the equivalent of an 80W bulb, but the reviews that I've read say it's quite a bit less bright than that.

Can anyone tell me how bright this lantern is compared to a coleman?

Thanks,

rhz

I bought one of the primus lanterns when I was in Maine at L L Bean. I was on a car camping trip and tried it out that night. Boy, was I disappointd! The light was nowhere near as bright as a coleman lantern, and, in fact, it was not as bright as a small battery-operated light. I had hoped to have a fun light for car camping that used the same fuel I used to cook. I returned the lantern the next morning, and have continued to use a small battery-powered light with rechargeable batteries. By the way, I was not all that confident that the Primus lantern would have stood up to the rigors of backpacking if I had brought it on a trip, and I am quite gentle with my backpacking gear.

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for the info. I guess I'll just get a coleman lamp for car camping.

I have one of the primus lanterns, its reasonably bright for its size. plus it has some decent adjustability.

it gives you that lantern sound and the light just feels better than a flash light or any other battery powered light. i have the one with the mesh screen instead of glass it is pretty durable. occasionally the piezo is reluctant to light (for me, my brother in law got it to light first click every time.. wtf..)

i was concerned with the mantle durability so i tried using it with some coleman lantern mantles.. it did work, but they were extremely fragile. I finally got fed up and put the factory one on it. its made of some other kind of material than the coleman lanterns. it is like a tank compared.
