I use Rite in the Rain notebooks for journaling while hiking and also for field notes and I haven't found an eraser that will remove pencil marks without leaving huge dirty smears. I was wondering if anyone had found an acceptable eraser. I do use the Fisher bullet pens but sometimes pencil is more convenient.

I've just tested a few erasers (rubbers as they're called here in the UK, to the great amusement of my American friends) on a "Rite in the Rain" 371-M notebook. By far the best result was with a Pentel Clic Eraser ZE-21. On a softish pencil (one from IKEA, actually, seems to be roughly equivalent to an HB grade) there was a small amount of smudging, but it erased the lines from a Sanford Design Drawing F pencil very well indeed with no smudges or greying of the paper. The Pentel eraser looks as if it's still available: it comes in a pen-style dispenser, but you can buy just the refill and cut a piece from that to save weight.

The type of pencil you use will make a big difference. Old woodcraft manuals invariably recommended hard-leaded pencils over softer ones to avoid notes being smudged or blurred in the wet. Those were the pre-ballpoint days too, so ink meant a fountain pen and they were troublesome in the field. An F-grade pencil is a good compromise, or a 2H, producing a clear line without being too faint.

I actually have a Pentel Clik but it didn't do great job. I'm wondering if my pencil choice is the problem. I'm using standard #2 0.7 mm lead. I might try to find some HB refills. I'm also wondering if a kneaded eraser might work.

The kneaded eraser may work, although I found them prone to smudging on some grades of paper. I have one and a gum eraser around here somewhere, but they've been packed away for years. If I can find them I'll see how they fare.
