I'm having difficulty deciding on a pack for an upcoming JMT hike. I ordered and compared/tried at home, the Osprey Exos 58 and didn't like the fit on my hips. I also tried the ULA Catalyst, and it just didn't feel right. Those are being returned.

I'm now considering the 3 packs listed in the subject line, but can only see the Atmos 65 locally.

I need good back support and am willing to go a little heavy for that, and comfort. I'm 60 years old and had back surgery a few years ago – so need to treat my back well.

I leave for the JMT in 2 weeks and will go with my old standby pack if I can't find anything better – my 20 year old Mountainsmith Mountainlight 3500. Old school for sure but it has treated me well over the years.

I did the JMT in 7 days when I was 20, took 12 days at 50, and am shooting for 12 days again at 60. So, this isn't 5 months on the PCT, but I would like to be as comfortable as possible even though its only 12 days – which can seem a lifetime with the wrong pack.

I'm training/hiking everyday, so if I can get something that feels good in the next couple of days, I'll have time for 5 good hikes with it before leaving.

Any thoughts on the 3 listed packs?

Is REI your only local store? If so, you can order the GG Escape online from them (and the Nimbus Trace 62 if you want to try that), have it delivered to the store, pick it up and fit it and try it out there. If it doesn't work return the pack(s) before even going home. They have a few GG packs, they just don't stock them in-store.

I haven't worn any of those packs, but I do have an older model Osprey Aether 60 which I really like. It supports weight really well.

I'd second what Charles said about REI- only way to know what works for you is to try out the pack.

This aside, I'd lean toward one of the Granite Gear packs largely because of the hipbelt. For me, the hipbelts on the Atmos and Exos just don't seem to work. The hipbelt and suspension on the Aether 60 is brilliant, though the pack is heavier than most of us here want.

For heavier loads (35+) I'd go with the GG Nimbus Meridian or Nimbus Trace. For loads under that I'd lean towards the Escape AC, Blaze AC or Crown VC. Personally, feature- and weight-wise I'd prefer the Blaze AC or Crown VC over the Escape AC but that's more a matter of what you like. The AC packs seem to hug my lower back a bit better than the Nimbus packs- I think the curve on the backpanel has more of a pronounced curve.

Good luck!
