I'm doing the JMT in a few weeks. I like hiking in shorts and usually carry supplex long pants, about 8 oz ( I don't like convertibles). I just read about the Montbell Dynamo wind pants. What do you think about substituting the supplex pants, usually only worn in the am and late pm, with the wind pants? I will also have capilene long johns.

Hey Don,

I have nearly 1,500 miles of trail-wear-time with the Montbell Dynamo Wind Pants over almost 400 days of use. I hope to pass the 1500 mile mark before the end of 2012.

They have made it through blackberry bushes (the most vile thing in the world AFAIC), hip-deep snow, six foot tall fern groves, 120(f) weather (uggh, a trip through death valley this summer tried hard to killed me), walking through nasty knee-high ponds of water that have covered trails because of heavy rains in 2011, and everything else I have been through while hiking the last few years.

I should mention that this is all in a *single* pair of these pants!

Check out my long term review of them.

I forget where – his site probably – but John A. Has a great review of these. I am looking for a pair too. I currently have two pairs of golite Trunk pants. I like them for summer hiking as bug/poison oak pants and for evenings in camp. They're are 5.2 oz. though, so I think the Dynamo will e their probable successor.

Indeed it seems silly to carry heavy long pants when you don't wear them that much, and the Dynamos work as well or better.

I love mine and the fabric feels much nicer when wet than supplex and dries quicker too I think.

There is a review by Will rietveld as well a page on the user review forum.
