What size mid is required to sleep 4 comfortably?
Will 9×9 do it, or 10×10?

You could probably fit 4 in a 9×9, but if you want to do it comfortably I'd go 10×10. I have a 10×10 oware mid that works great.
How far is the fabric above your head when sleeping in a mid parallel to the side?
I made an 11' x 11' pyramid and it's luxurious for four, lots of room for gear, lots of head height. It probably could sleep six without too much difficulty. It doesn't weigh much more than a 10' x 10', either. Anyway, a 10' x 10' should be fine for four.
