I placed the zipper down the center of the last bivy I made. I really like this location for ease of entry and access to the bivy contents from outside. When sitting in the bivy with the zipper open it feels sort of like sitting in a cayak.
Here's a photo of a centrally place zipper in a bivy that Steve at Suluk 46 made.
The zipper in Steve's photo is 3' long. I'm not very flexible so I made mine 5' long.
Have others tried this location? If so how did it work out for you?
Jul 15, 2012 at 11:23 am #1894898I have sort of a combination of quilt and bivy.
I have always had the zipper down the middle. I think it works much better. (But then I have had little experience with side zipper).
If it's warm, I unzip and sort of roll under the sides to get them out of the way but out of the dirt. And there's a large barrier between the dirt to the sides and inside my bag.
It goes about half way down the front.
Theoretically, it's less waterproof, but the zipper is at the top of "a ridge" so the water flows away from the zipper. And I normally have a tarp so I'm just stopping rain splash which there isn't much of at the zipper.
Theoretically there's a cold spot at the zipper, but I wear an insulated vest also, so between the vest and quilt there is no noticable cold spot.

Good point on the less waterproof aspect. I forgot to mention that I only use the bivy under a tarp so water proofness isn't a factor. I'm going for warmth and bug proofness only.
