Hey friends, I'm doing a solo run of the Outer Mountain Loop at Big Bend on the 12th of March or so, and I've realized that I might have some difficulty with my clothing.
For those that don't know, the desert floor section of the Loop is a little overgrown with all manner of thorned villains, shrubs, cacti, etc. The first time I did the Loop was in January, during which time it was just cool enough that I could wear my Cloudveil Peak Pants and Prospector Pullover the whole time, and still be comfortable. My suit of Inertia armor kept me well protected from the sharp edges, in addition to sunburn.
This time around, I might expect daytime highs in the 80s on the desert floor, which I'm afraid will just be too hot for pants and long sleeves. I hike hot, and I suspect the protection just might not be worth it.
So now I'm left with a decision to make regarding my clothing. What can I wear that provides abrasion resistance, but is really breathable/ventilated as well? Or should I just go for shorts and short sleeves and accept the abrasions to my skin instead? I could see this being fine with me, really–except then I need to worry about sun protection. Sunscreen regimen 2-3 times a day? Eesh, somebody suggest something. Thanks.
