I'm preparing for a hike of the John Muir Trail and would like to get a pair of light shoes to throw on for river crossings. Sprint Aquatic Mesh shoes look ideal, but I can't seem to find them anywhere. Anyone know where I can get a pair?

I was also thinking about vibram 5-finger shoes but have a few hold ups. First, they're quite a bit heavier (though they could potentially be used on the trail to give my feet a break from boots). Second, putting hot/bruised toes into tight sleeves might not be the most comfortable thing to do. Anyone try them?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Seems every one is out of stock on the sprint aquatics. I've used them on a couple of long trips both for stream crossings and camp shoes. They were adequate for both in the conditions encountered including the JMT. This year on the JMT you may not have any wet crossings other than Evolution Creek and if you wade the San Joaquin River at MTR to enjoy the hot springs and Warm Lake. It is really dry up there this year.

I don't use the Aquatics any more and simply walk through any water using trail runners. On the JMT they'll dry in about an hour. In camp I just loosen the laces and they make comfy camp shoes (after washing my feet and putting on clean socks). There was a recent post about these shoes that might work for you if you think you need something.

Sprint Aquatics now seem to have them only in women's sizes:

OK if you wear no larger than men's size 10….

Somebody recently posted about these, which are very similar but have up to men's 13:

I found the Sprint Aquatics too flimsy for rocky stream fords, at least for me. I just splash through in my trail runners, then wring out my socks afterwards and walk them dry. The Sprint Aquatics were great for going in and out of the tent, though–they didn't tear up the ground outside the door like my trail runners do. I generally use my Goose Feet with their overbooties for that purpose, though, except in really warm weather.

Sam,

I have a pair of new, never used sprint aquatic men's size 11 as well as a slightly heavier mesh shoe in about the same size. If you're interested, send me a PM, and I can send you pics, and we can discuss.

Shoes have been sold (16 July 2012)

Thanks for the feedback! One of those will probably do the trick. Richard, I'm going to look around online a bit more at the various options, but I may get in touch tomorrow.
