Ursack suitable for Tahoe?

Hi all :)

I live in the Tahoe area, and that is where I hike/backpack 90% of the time. I currently own a Garcia bear barrel, but I'm thinking of getting an Ursack instead for the weight savings. I know that in some areas (Yosemite, King's Canyon etc.) bear barrels are required, and I don't mind carrying it should we venture into those areas. However, I'd like something lighter for our local trips if I can get away with it. I typically do 1 or 2 night trips with enough food for 2 humans & 2 dogs stored in the barrel, so for such short trips the barrel is usually mostly empty.

From my personal experience, I've only seen wild bears twice while out & about in the area: once at Spooner Lake (mother & 2 cubs!) and once at Northstar. Most other campers seem to be hanging their food as I don't see a lot of people with bear barrels on the trail. I'm rubbish at throwing, and don't fancy spending my whole evening trying to hang my food, so hanging is out for me. My question is this: are there any areas of Tahoe where it would be advisable to use a barrel instead of an Ursack? Or will I be pretty safe using an Ursack all over Tahoe as long as I tie it correctly and use an opsack inside?

Personally, if it's only black bears, and something more isn't required by regulations, I hang it in a tree to minimize ant and marmot visits but close to my tent so I can scare away whatever comes. Or inside the tent. That's what I did in Desolation last week. As a teenager, in the Sierra, I worried about black bears and gave them way too much respect. After lots of Alaskan griz-infested trips, some time in Africa, and eating a lot of black-bear stew last month, I worry about black bears less than cattle – they're much smaller and less likely to charge.

You are fine with an ursack or as Davis said even hanging on the trt. I did take an ursack but only because a staged a resupply that I hid along the trail in an ursack. I also left two gallons of water.

Thanks for the responses!

I'm not as concerned about a bear encounter as I am about a bear getting my food and equating hikers with easy meals. Looks like I will be fine with an Ursack :)

Go with a Ursack, I do. If going into Desolation, they'll ask if you have a canister, tell them yes. A canister can be gotten for free use while in Desolation last I heard. I've never had trouble there and the only bear I've seen was west of Two Peaks, outside the wilderness. Sounds like where you have seen bears is where you have the best chance for an encounter due to the vacationers and uninformed weekenders leaving garbage out and in garages, thus attracting hungry critters.
