Hi All,

Another I lost my gear thread. One is too many.

Here's what I used to have-

Tent – Tarptent Sublite Sil
Backpack – GoLite Jam 2 2009
Sleeping Bag – Mont Bell UL Spiral Down #1
Sleeping Pad – Exped Synmat UL 7 Air Pad
Stove – Vargo Ti and a Gram Weenie Pro (I did not take both on trips)
Pot – .6L or 1.1L Ti Pots
Hard Shell Jacket – Patagonia M10

My base weight with luxuries was 12 pounds. I usually backpack 1 to 2 nights in the Colorado Rockies with my dog. 3 Seasons. My sleep system was perfect. I am thinking about replacing the kitchen with a JetBoil Sol Ti. It boils so fast and easy, I can quickly boil water for myself and puppy. It is compact so it will work well in my "day" pack. The tent, jacket, and backpack are the big question marks.

I liked the Sublite Sil quite a bit. Comfortable and the pack volume is low. Side-entry is nice with a dog. I am a poor site selector and always choose sites with mosquitos :( The Sil version is no longer listed on the Tarptent website. The Notch looks like a great upgrade and currently in stock. I use 110 Z-Poles so I can use my treking poles. What other 1P side-entry tents should I be looking at?

Hard Shell. I prefer a hard shell over the wind shirt/jacket if I am going to spend lots of time above tree line. My Houdini was saved. I spent weeks last year researching, buying, and shipping back shells before I found the M10. A lot of the men's shells fit so poorly. What's new and available in women's models? Insurance will pay full price so I don't need to wait for sales :)

Pack. I did not love or hate the Jam. It was ok. I want to keep it in the 35 to 40L range. Is it possible to find something with a little bit more frame/support in the same weight range?

I probably will not have time to backpack until August so immediate availability is not important.

Thanks All
Chris

I'd look at the SMD Feather Pack and Skyscape (X if you can afford it). The Feather is at the upper end of your size range and you could probably get a modified hoop-stay to work in the pocket (or you could get an aluminum rod from a place like McMaster-Carr and bend it to fit). MLD Burn is another to look at that might be modifiable for some sort of a hoop support inside with a couple of sewn tabs.

Look at the OHM 2.0 and the Circuit. good weight to load carrying comfort ratio. I like my Circuit for it great frame and low weight.

Double check the reviews on the Jetboil Sol Ti. Basically it's been uncommon (but enough to generate several reports) but there have been a few instances where the aluminum fins fail and melt. Basically a catastrophic failure of the product. The customer support has been middling with some receiving excellent service and others being told due to a customer mod they will not return the product (I understand not honoring the warranty, I don't understand the theft without compensation). BPL has a few threads regarding this issue.

Just be forewarned before making your decision on the jetboil Titanium (seems to be Ti model limited).

Other than that good luck kitting yourself out again and back on the trails!

You could always add a couple of stays to a Jam or any frameless pack if you don't mind a little DIY. Just an option to consider. Ultralight packs with frames in that volume aren't very common.

the gg gorilla has great support and weighs a little less than a jam. I've tried on lot of packs and for me the gg was by far the most comfortable. No DIY frame necessary.
