I used my Porter pack on its maiden voyage a couple of weeks ago. I'd like some recommendations for packing a pack without lid or pockets, especially for including a 2 liter Platypus with hose as well as small items. Extending the hose through the corner of the roll-top closure of the pack seems to ruin the promise of waterproofing. If you don't use a bladder, how do you affix a bottle? I know Mike Clelland and others carry a 1-liter bottle in a side mesh pocket, but even if I had a pocket I was never able to reach back and high enough to pull it out of the pocket. If I have to take off my pack to get water, I'll never drink enough.
I am finding that I miss the organizational benefit of a top or side pockets. My small first aid kit, small stuff kit (and something else I can't remember) kept getting lost in the bottom of a lightly packed bag.
I've purchased the beaver tail attachment for the Porter to stuff a wet tent or rain gear into but haven't yet used it.
I've been hearing of people who are strapping stuff on to the back or in small add-on pockets. What do you recommend?
Do you have pics of stuff you've (securely!) strapped to the back using daisy chains or add-on pockets you've made that you can share as an example?
