After ditching my previous double wall tent for a tarptent rainbow last year, I've been really liking it. However, although I camp mostly in the Mid-Atlantic states, in winter it can still be drafty with all that perimeter netting like when I was on top of a mountain bald in Tennessee in below freezing weather last November. I'm looking for some sort of light tent with a solid inner for winter camping and I would like to stick to tarptent. The first thing that comes to mind is the scarp 1. However, I am 6'6" Can anyone comment on the usable space. I presume those end struts keep the walls vertical that all 86 inches is really usable. Second, does anyone (Franco perhaps) have a picture of the scarp with a large neoair in it. Looking at the specs it doesn't seem like there would be much room to spare with a 25" wide neoair inside. One thing I like about the rainbow is that the floor is wide enough (or at least collapses enough) that I can fit the wide neoair in and still have a decent amount of room for things. I can even blow up the air mattress inside the tent if needed. Another possibility is the stratospire 1 with the solid inner. Can anyone comment on the usable space in that vs the scarp. The scarp might also be a little short heighwise for me.

Hi,

I have both tents, I dont think the Ss1 would be long enough but the Scarp 1 should be.

Franco or Henry Shires will know.

Cheers,

Scarp 1
The floor is 32"x86" so the mat will fit but you need a bit more room than that for your sleeping bag.
About 3" in from the end the inner is at 18" (20" for the fly) so subtract the 2.5" for the mat , your foot height (minus a bit because they usually are sideways or pointing outwards) and the loft of the top of your sleeping bag.
As for headroom, the apex of the inner is at around 37" but there is a way to increase hat.
Reduce the pole tip to tip distance from 72" to 67" and your inner will be at 39" (the fly about 2" extra)
It will look like this :
Scarp 1 high

I'll do the SS 1 after coffee..
Stephen is right…
you have more headroom under the SS1 (43" on a low set up as in the pic) but you have less headroom at the ends.

About 3" in it is around 14" high so not enough unless you sleep curled up .
You could tweak it a bit by increasing the pole height to 50" and sleeping a bit sideways it may be doable but the mesh will be more or less on you face.

Scarp 1 and SS1
