I got a new Exped UL7 Synmat this past Christmas and have only used it twice. On both occations I woke to find that the mat was about one good breath deflated from when I had gone to sleep. The first time was in temps about 25 degrees and I wrote that off due to temps but then I used it last weekend (55 deg) and it did the same thing. Is this normal or do I need to start looking for a very small leak.

Do you inflate the pad with your mouth? It's possible that during the night the warm breath cools enough to signficantly reduce the air pressure. Mine hasn't had any issues, but I have seen reports of slow leaking though.

I've read MORE reports of the pad deflating slightly due to inflation with your mouth, than I have about slow leaks. And maybe some of those slow leaks were just mis-attributed?

You gotta figure out a way to troubleshoot whether it's actually a leak or just the air cooling.

I use a Schnozzle Pump Bag for mine now, as it is the same weight as a liner bag, but dual purpose, and actually has a roll top closure unlike using a garbage bag. Plus, it can double as a HUGE (like, at home bed sized) pillow if you want. I don't usually buy into items like this, but it's functionality was too great to ignore. Also, let's face it, sometimes huffing 20 – 30 breaths into a pad is the last thing you feel like doing at altitude. The bag inflates it in 1.5 "scoops" of air.

Kieth, yes I've experienced the same thing on both a Synmat and Down mat- it could be a number of things but here are a few I would try first (I called and talked to an Exped tech and this is what he told me), they both worked,

Take a cloth and clean the inside of the valves and valve lids using your finger (like you were cleaning your ear with a wash cloth). Rub all surfaces completely clean.

Then on the deflation valve, stick your finger under the flapper/stopper (diaphragm) on the inside and wipe carefully underneath it- all the way around.

This fixed both my mats.

The valves gets a lot of use and the chance that a small leak can happen between the glue, pad and valve is greater than other areas, especially right were the connection is between the cap and valve, because of the torque on the valve when opening.
You will need to do a water test to see is this is where that problem is. Putting the repair glue around the valve will fix it and not void the warranty.

Hope this helps,
Tad
