Hi.

I use a quilt for summer camping since several years. I like it a lot. For around freezing temp, i use (got it almost new from a forum member last fall) a Western mountaineering Megalite sleeping bag. It is a very nice mummy bag. I prefer quilt over sleeping bag so i may sell the WM and buy a 20F quilt.

What i would like (if it is a good idea) is a nice 20F down quilt i could open flat and use as a summer camping comforter for 2. I will leave for a 1-2 years bicycle trip and we will get cold temp but also mild and pretty hot temp. I would not use it duo when colder or very hot but it would be very nice to sleep like at home when we could in mild temp. Maybe some hardware (webbing) to keep it under control (feet). My summer quilt could be use as a down quilt too so it may be possible to build something like that.

My Megalite bag is big enough for 2 in mild weather but the footbox is no fun for two.

What do you think?

I like quilts that open flat like a blanket when it's warm out, but you're going have a hard time finding a quilt that opens up wide enough to use as a blanket for two. Usually things are getting fairly narrow by the foot end so its just enough width for one. You could get a specially made super wide quilt, but you won't be saving much weight then. I'd imagine you'd want about 70" wide at the head and about 50" at the feet….total guess though.

Thanks for this information. I know a quilt big enough for two (i say in mild weather so draft would not be a big problem) would be bigger than what i am used too and it would take more space. I will see again in a few weeks if a 2 weeks trip without spooning make me feel bad. If so, i will need to do something since our upcoming trip is over 1 year long! I know my wife prefer sleeping bag and more when it is colder. But she miss spooning too a lot. I prefer quilt. I use a quilt for summer but i use a sleeping bag around freezing and i'd like to quilt at this temp too. I have a down jacket i add when temp is even colder or to stretch my summer quilt. Will think about this.

Thanks!
