I should be able to chime in a week or two, should be receiving mine any day :)

my current shoe is the Sabino Trail and it performs great off trail (I'm on my second pair), hoping the Masochist performs as well (and fits as well)- wanted to try a little lighter shoe w/o going too far down the minimal path

Love mine, make sure not to get the Goretex ones unless you're looking for that model.

Cheers Guys,

It is the outdry pair I have, I deliberately got those as have a pair of Tnf and Salomon mesh runners already and find a lot of dust gets throughg the mesh.

I have a pair of the original masochists, and I've tried on some of the masochist 2s. I think the only real difference is the construction of the rock plate. Where the originals have a distinctively different piece in the middle, the masochist 2s have molded the 2 plastics together into a single piece.

Anyway, I really like the masochist 1, and it performs well enough off trail. I've only done a couple miles off trail around major blowdowns in them, but the aforementioned rock plate holds up well. It's certainly not very rigid, but it is significantly harder than the surrounding material. I could see how someone wanting to do more off trail navigation might want something a bit more stiff.

I really like the Montrail Masochist and have used the shoe for both trail running and hiking. The shoe has handled everything I've challenged it with while hiking, both on and off trail. For me the Masochist fits well, has very good traction and is surprisingly durable. I'm currently using the Montrail Bajada for trail running but still prefer the Masochist for hiking.

unfortunately I won't be able to lend my opinion as I sent mine back :( I was told by a Montrail rep that the Sabino Trail and Masochist II were built on the same last and would fit the same- they do not. The Sabino Trail has lots of room in the toe box (the shoe actually fits like a EE), the Masochist doesn't. I wouldn't say it's narrow, but definitely not as roomy as the Sabino and I need the room

Cheers Guys :-)

That's a shame Mike, I went up a size so they where good for me.

size up wouldn't have helped much- my toes are a little weird in that the first four toes are all about the same length- so it's not just length- I need the width, the Masochist has a narrower toe design- should have snapped a couple of comparo pics

my Mom called them Irish toes, probably just to make me feel better about them :)

Irish toes, never heard that one.

Must tell the folks when I am back home next month :-)

my curiosity got the best of me and I googled it and it looks my Mam wasn't lying about it :)- found a pic that showed a modern "Scot-Irish foot" that was long and relatively narrow w/ the toes almost even across, next to it a pic of a modern English foot- chubbier w/ the toes angled downward from the big toe- what do you know!

Brilliant :-)

My mother used say it was shoe boxes and not shoes I needed due to my size twelves.
