Alternate title, Caldera Cone sidewinder vs Jetboil Sol vs Jetboil Sumo.
I'm in need of some cook stove advice. I've narrowed the choices down to a few, but am willing to hear new suggestions. I'm trying to seriously lighten my load this year.
Requirements,
Number of People: 2, plus a 4 year old for a quick trip.
Type of cooking: Freezer Bag mostly, with hot drinks.
Length of Trips: 3-5 days, 7 at the outside.
Seasons: 3.
Location: Mostly the Rockies.
I currently own a Primus micron stove, an MLD 850ml and an older MSI nonstick aluminum 1L and 2L cookpot. The Primus weighs in at about 3.5 oz and the 2 Liter MSI pot at about 8.75 oz.
After way too much reading, most of it here. I think i've decided that I want the pot to be 1.6 – 2 liters. This gives us the flexibility to have hot drinks, meet most FBC recipe's requirements and support the addition of a child. I'm also looking at aluminum for pot costs.
Options, (Note the weights aren't exact and assuming a 100g canister weighs 3.3oz).
1. Keep the Primus stove, Exchange current pot with an Open Country 2qt pot, (maybe an HA one) and add a windscreen. 5oz pot + 3.5 oz + .5 oz windscreen + 3.3 oz canister= 12oz for $10 – $20
2. Caldera Cone Sidewinder w/Open Country 2qt. 10 oz for $65 (inc shipping)
3. Jetboil Sol .8L, do multiple boils. 12 oz + 3.3 oz canister = 15 oz for $95 (o2 gear shop right now sale)
4. Jetboil Sol Sumo 1.8L. 16 oz + 3.3 oz canister = 19 oz for $103
The main question, are the Jetboils really that much less hassle and better fuel consumption? Are multiple boils painless and quick enough with the Jetboil system to negate the need for the sumo or a bigger pot? Is the Caldera Cone also worth it to get rid of the weight and windscreen hassle of the cheap option 1? What would you do and why? Thanks in advance! I really appreciate it.
