Just wondering about fill rates for a 30°F TQ.

We shall say the start point is a 56" wide (Head end), 40" foot end, 74" long tapered TQ with 1" baffles, 7oz 900 fill down. Temp rating of 40°F. (Assuming this would already have 30% overfill as standard)

If I wanted a rating of 30°F would adding a further 2-3oz 900 fill to a standard 40°F TQ get me there comfortably.

OR

Should I increase the baffle height to 1.5" and still use the 2-3oz extra down (9-10oz total fill)

My thoughts would be the increase in baffle height to 1.5" would be the better option compared to just overfilling the 1" baffles.

I have a Katabatic Chisos with similar dimensions if not slightly larger, that normally comes with 8.6 oz of 900 fill and I had 2 oz added. This bag has 3/4" baffle height and is plenty warm to freezing.

I had a quick look at the Western Mountaineering chart and that seems to agree with :
"My thoughts would be the increase in baffle height to 1.5" would be the better option compared to just overfilling the 1" baffles.'
Roughly it increases the baffle height by 1" (tot, so half inch each top and bottom) for a 10f decrease in temperature.

Thanks guys

I appreciate the responses and I'm steering towards 1.5" baffles.

Still interested in others responses though if they have one ??
