Does anybody happen to know the weight of a fluid ounce of denatured alcohol? I haven't got the means to weight it myself.

Here it is!

Specific Gravity .817

803grams/liter

6.79pounds/gallon

Randy (the science teacher)

1 Fluid ounce = 29.57ml

so 1 fluid ounce = about 24.2 grams

Or … about .817 of an ounce.

I round it down to about 80% usually …. it's close enough.

We commonly use "ounce" for both volume and weight, but technically, the two are differentiated as follows:

Fluid ounce = volume measurement
Avoirdupois ounce = weight measurement

So, one fluid ounce of water weighs 1.0425 avoirdupois ounce.
One gallon (128 fluid ounces) of water weighs 133.44 avoirdupois ounces — and dividing that by 16 gives you 8.34 lbs.

Now, what type of liquid will have one fluid ounce weighing exactly one avoirdupois ounce? Randy?

How many birds are you plucking?

Edit: I see you changed your question. This one is tough, but my wild guess is that a pound will weigh a pound. :)

> … 900 fill down weigh…

How about 454 grams – – just to confuse the already off-topic issue even more.

Robert,

I'm assuming you mean how much does a volumetric ounce of water weigh.

Theoretically speaking (not really important IMO for most practical purposes unless we're talkin' very large volumes of water), the answer is a little more complicated than "a ounce of water weighs this-or-that amount".

Keepin' it simple and not too detailed, the answer to your question is…

It depends upon the temperature of the water! That's right! A volumetric ounce of water will weigh a very tiny bit different when it's at 0C, 4C, 20C (a typical just slightly on the cool side room temp), 37C (body temp), or 100C. This happens NOT only when a phase change occurs (such as when the water freezes), but ALSO at a variety of temperatures.

The reason is that the specific gravity and density of the water changes with temperature. So, the amount of water (i.e., the number of water molecules) that can fit in a fixed size volumetric ounce will vary, and so the mass of that water will vary since the number of molecules that can fit in a particular volume (in this case one volumetric ounce) will vary. Makes sense, doesn't it?!

So, if you're interested in a VERY EXACT answer, you need to specify the temperature.

Of course, we're talkin' pure water here with no impurities.

Now that we have the BushBuddy stove available, how long will it be before someone wants to know… wait for it…

How much wood could a Wood Chuck chuck?

What a hoot…

ok here's one…

If an old man holds out his hand with 5 beans in it, and you take 3 how many do you have left?

PostedFeb 22, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Doesn't that depend on which hand he is holding out?…or no… would it be the same?..oh, I just don't know.
Oh, I get it we're talking volume vs weight and both have the same name. Well…. you had me going.

Dumb comment, meant to be funny. my appologies

John, doesn't depend upon which hand the old man is holding out. read Evan's precise words again. "…how many do YOU [emphasis mine] have left?"

John, if YOU took three from the old man, YOU'D have three left!

Had a memorable lesson in OBSERVATION many yrs ago that since has served me well (except for perhaps one instance mentioned below):

Had a college chemistry prof who wanted to teach us the importance of observation. He was also an amateur magician (slight of hand and all that). So he took a beaker of a particularly foul tasting chemical, dipped his MIDDLE finger in and then licked his RING finger! The selected student (not me this time as i, being shy, always sat in the back) in the front row was handed the beaker and told to perform the same test. This student, who had not yet learned to be observant, dipped his INDEX finger into the liquid in the beaker and licked his INDEX finger! His reaction was memorable to say the least. I'd rather not say what the originally sterile chemical was but, many years ago, i accidentally got a very small taste once of a similar chemical when i got sprayed changing my son's diaper (the lil' sharp-shooter that he was – yeah, i was standin' in the wrong place!).

LOL! What Mother or Father hasn't had that happen. It's how our sons christen us.
