I'm going to the Kings Path in the most north of Sweden this summer for 8-10 days and will go to Himalaya next year early-summer for ~two weeks, and I'm having a hard time deciding on what tent to get. As I can get a great deal on Hilleberg-tents so I will probably invest in one of those.

The two models I'm looking at right now are the Kaikum 3 and the Keron 3. The Kaikum is a light-weight version of the Keron, but both are described as four-season tents. The Kaikum 3 weights in at 3,2kg and is 25cm wider (185cm in total) while the Keron 3 weights 4kg. The
Keron is able to handle the most harsh weather (people have used it crossing Greenland and so forth), while the Kaikum is "outstanding for use in protected terrain in any weather, and both are also easily robust enough to handle use in exposed and/or above tree-line terrain in all but the worst conditions"(from their product description). The design is otherwise identical.

Now, the weight difference is 0,8kg. Would the extra weight be worth the extra sturdiness and probably lifetime? As I'm not a very experienced wanderer I'm not sure if the extra weight will be to much of a burden in the long run.

Appreciate your help!

Hey man,

I'll be hiking Kungsleden with a friend from Uppsala in June. It's a little early, but it is the only time we can both get three weeks off.

I'm taking a Shangri-La 1 tarp and using a headnet (i heard the bugs are going to be terrible in June). Its a pretty solid tarp and is considered to be four seasons.

When are you going to be on the Kings Trail?

Kungsleden this summer and the Himalayas next summer, sounds like you've got some great trek and travel planned.

I think you are buying more tent then you need. Kaikum 3 and the Kerum 3 are both very spacious 3 person tents, weighing in the 8 – 10 pound range. The description from Hilleberg says "suited to extended snow camping in extreme conditions." It is designed for situations where you might spend several days waiting out a snowstorm in your tent.

Kungsleden in the summer is a well traveled route, some of it even has huts along the way, a much lighter shelter will suffice.

Tjena! We're going in the middle of july, and we haven't decided exactly were to start, although we are doing Kebnekaise :) Three weeks! Walking the whole trail?

I took the Kaitum 3, even though it might be overkill for this journey only (got a demonstration ex that had been out for 3 days and got 30% of from an already good price and will hopefully last me atleast half a lifetime :) only 3.1 kg and 185cm wide). Thank you for your help!

How about a TarpTent Scarp 2, or the backpackinglight editor's winter favorite the MSR Hubba Hubba HP?
