Double bagging with a quilt?

Welcome to BPL, Chad. Remember that temperature ratings are really quite arbitrary. Rather than discuss a subjective value in a piece of gears abilities it makes more sense to discuss something objective such as inches of loft or CLO.

Do some searching within the forums for "loft" or "CLO" to get some very in-depth information regarding various insulations strengths and weaknesses.

You've described my winter sleep system: I use a Moonstone 20F bag with a Nunatak Arc Ghost.

The system is super adjustable: in the warmer hours of early evenings the quilt can be pushed down, then if you wake up cold later you can pull it up and you're warm again.

Then you have the flexibility of using the bag alone or the quilt alone, depending on the night. it's the best of both worlds.

EDIT: PS another hidden advantage of owning a lightweight quilt is the ability to lend it to others. If there are ladies on your trip and they have a cold night, you can hand them an extra pound of quilt and they'll be warm and snuggly thanks to you. I've done it 4 times now and I condsider the quilt to have paid for itself :)

A 48" wide quilt for me is fine as the primary quilt. It is not wide enough for an overquilt. I use the Jacks'R'Better No Sniveller inside and the Nunatak Arc Alpinist (55" wide) outside.
