The Golite Kenai (pertex) is on sale for 50 bucks right now. That's a very tempting price for a lightweight shell, but I'm wondering if anybody has any thoughts/experiences with this jacket. I can't find many 'reviews' online, and what little is there seem mixed. Thoughts?

Thanks.

I have a Golite Tumalo which is a very similar jacket. It works well across a variety of situations and the Pertex Shield is so soft and quiet. Does the fabric breath the best? No, but it does does have 13" pit zips and the pockets may be mesh or not. Is it the most waterproof? No, but from what I have read even after 8 hours of rain every rain jacket wets out. Unless you are going to put down $300 for eVent or Goretex Pro shell $50 is a steal. If they had any left in XXL I would think about getting one.

So, a $50 Kenai, or a $69 Precip? I live in the Bay Area so would mostly be using a light shell for shoulder season precip, and summer afternoon bursts. I have a 3 layer Goretex shell for heavy winter rain and snow. So given its intended use, it could get a work out, but not as hard as it could elsehwere.

I bought a Malpais a couple months back in the same size a a Dakota windshirt I bought last year. I ended up having to return the Malpais and size up one to get a good fit due to where the hem fell at the hips. I would recommend either getting the next size up, or getting 2 and returning one. The return process on my smaller jacket was pretty painles…
