Does anybody here ever backpack with a tent only (without the rainfly)? And if so, how has it worked out for you? I refuse to give up the protection from bugs and creepy crawlies, but if the chance of rain is slim to none, I might be tempted to try this out. Not to mention the views from the tent are much better without a fly obstructing it.

I'm just curious if anyone prefers this shelter method, or has at least tried it and could provide feedback.

I made the mistake of only taking a fly on a 7-10 night trip where there was little prospect of insects and rain.

Both proved incorrect. Not to mention the amount of sand that can blow over stuff including your face at night.

I'm not tempted to try that again any time soon unless for just a couple of nights.

I set up my tent that way quite often, but keep the fly close in case of rain as you never know. I guess if I were hiking in the desert and the forecast was clear all the way I may try it, but then I would just take my Tyvek Sublight anyway.
