I will be moving from Virginia to California (right next to Joshua Tree!) for work, and have nearly the entire month of November off to make the move. I doubt it will take me more than a week to get across the country and moved in (I don't own much stuff) so I'm hoping to do some exploring along the way. If anyone has good 2-5 day trip suggestions I would love to hear them. I can pretty much go anywhere along the way so it doesn't matter if it is along the route from VA to CA, but I would like to avoid heavy snowfall. Cold temperatures are fine. My main criteria are good views and solitude. Let me know what you guys think.

November in the High Sierra can be a really neat time to go, or horrible, and you can't tell in advance which it will be. Other places along your way I can't comment on, but if I were in your shoes I would keep my options open and keep a close eye on the weather as November approaches. If the serious snows have yet to fall and the short-term forecast is good, a few days in the Sierra would be great – and you will have it almost to yourself.
