I'm looking for a good lightweight trail running shoe for hiking in the canyons of southern Utah this June. I don't think they'll need to be overly sturdy for the trails I'm doing (Coyote Gulch, Zion West Rim, Narrows, Upper Muley Twist, Calf Creek Falls, Little Wild Horse). They should be very breathable in the desert heat and they should be able to dry out quick for the wet hikes. I've done a little bit of research but there's just so much information its hard to filter it all so any thoughts are welcome.

Thank you,
Jody (looking for men's shoes, despite the name :)

I have been very happy with my Chacos for technical canyoneering if you aren't opposed to sandals. If you want a shoe, I love my Inov-8 Roclite 295. Mostly mesh, dry fast, sticky rubber, and reasonably durable.

sounds like an excellent trip. I went to many of those places last year, and New Balance MT 101's worked quite well. They grip slickrock well, and they dry quickly. The newer version is the 110, which I plan on trying on soon.

have fun!

I've been debating between the minimus, merrell trail glove, and inov-8 (of which I'm still trying to understand their numbering scheme). It sure seems like all these companies are in a competition to create the ugliest pair of shoes imaginable.

jody- also look at the Montrail line, they have several meshy trail runners that would fit the bill- Mountain Masochists, Sabino Trail to name two

we're planning a long run in early October in Zion and I will likely go w/ my Sabino Trails (possibly the Masochists), they did outstanding for our run in the Grand Canyon last month- I also use them for backpacking

fit is king, try a lot of shoes and insure they fit well- they can have every feature you want and if they don't fit properly you might as well toss them

also I'd be careful the MT110's we've had two members recently rip the material in them and I read an account of Joe Grants where they failed him in a race (ripped)

I love the New Balance Minimus MT10 and will be using them this month in Utah. I have wide feet and it’s always a pain finding a shoe that fits me properly. This model is available in wider width and fits me perfect. I found them a lot more comfortable than the Merrell Trail gloves.

I purchased the new Cascadias about 2 months ago and have put about 110 miles on them. Most comfortable hiking/trail running shoe I have owned. They are not minimalist though, if that's a requirement for you. And they are ugly….very very ugly.

Thanks Jon, they're not nearly as bad as some of the ones I came across.

And thanks all, I'll be doing as Mike says and heading over to the store to give them a try.
