So I've been using the Dyneema IronWire for a little bit now, but I'm having trouble melting the ends to avoid fraying like with traditional materials.
Anyone have any insight on how to avoid frayed ends on cut Dyneema IronWire specificially? I'm thinking maybe a butane lighter? Or is heat not the necessary tool…

May 7, 2012 at 3:11 pm #1875343Yeah, funny stuff. You should try using a hot surface instead. A hot plate (smell!) or a soldering iron.
Cheers
May 7, 2012 at 3:14 pm #1875345When I cut ends of 1/8" spectra for kitesurfing needs, I first apply liquid super glue to where I'm going to cut. Then, after it dries, I cut it with a razor blade.
Spectra doesn't bead up like nylon does, the fibers shrink faster than it can melt.

May 7, 2012 at 4:38 pm #1875372From what I remember, I have not had any trouble just using a lighter to melt the ends too. It has been a while since I have had to cut any though since I cut it all up and applied it when I got it…I keep the remainder for "emergencies" but have yet to need to use it for anything.
I like the superglue idea though.

May 7, 2012 at 7:58 pm #1875431It melts funny for me too. I like that super glue idea.
