So I really want to get a pair of Zpoles, but I also want to get a Contrail or Shangri-La 1. Does anyone have experience setting up either of these tents or similar tents with z poles? It looks as though it may be easier to achieve this with the Contrail because the Shangri La requires a short trekking pole for the rear.

What size poles will you be using ?
(110/120/130 ?)

I'd be using the 130's
OK.
A bit tricky with both shelters.
The ideal height is the same for both (45") easy for me because it is my elbow height..
At the front, at least with the Contrail, you can use a two pole set up.

As a matter of fact 130cm is just about ideal for that, the tricky part is to get them to stay like that.
On grass it is easy as you can push the carbide tips in a bit (stake like) to get a grip at ground level and then you lean one against the other like this :

(the handles of the Z pole look right for this…)
however on hard soil and or rock you will need to put some rocks around the tips to avoid sliding out of position.
I don't know the SL 1 height at the back (not listed..) but I had a look at those Z poles again (I had a play with them at a local shop sometime ago)
and I would not want to have two sections assembled (if that is close enough to the right height…) because it would put pressure and possibly cut into the "speed cone" (the blue connecting bit)
Mind you I am just guessing here.
I see that GolIte has the pole inside the Nest at the moment but I suspect that you should be able to put two on the outside .
With one pole only (at that angle) they will not be stable enough. To move the pole tip closer to the middle will make the Contrail too high, don't know about the SL1.

Yes I am "Tarptent Downunder" so if you order from Australia I make some money out of you. I hope you don't mind…
Thanks Franco, love the looks of the Contrail and may very well get one someday, but I just made the purchase on the SL1. It was just too god of a deal to pass on. I'm still hoping to find a way to set it up with Zpoles. If I have any luck I'll let you guys know. Thanks!
In the meantime Henry made his version…
