A few weeks ago, I called Marmot Warranty to complain that their "breathable" Ion left a lot to be desired. (In truth, the Ion was a bit more breathable than my old Golite Helios but that really wasn't saying much).

Yesterday, I received a free 2007 Ion replacement. The new model has absolutely nothing in common with the 2006! Gone is the plasticky-feeling ripstop nylon that Marmot claims as Pertex. The new polyester feels very comfy next to skin, and Marmot's tag states that the fabric incorporates "Driclime wicking technology". Marmot claims that the 2007 is both more breathable and more rain resistant.

The single color scheme (red or blue) is also replaced. 2007 Ions now come in two-tone color. Mine is blue/tempest (meaning blue/very dark blue). I've never been a fan of two-tone colors schemes, but this one looks pretty good.

Unfortunately, our temps are in the 70's — so I won't be able to give this jacket a fair test until temps come down again.

Forgot to add the bad news: For size Large, the 2007 Ion weighs 5 oz — as compared to just 3.5oz for the 2006.

But again, the material is much more comfy to the touch — and if the claimed improvements in breathability and rain resistance holds true, then I guess I can live with the additional 1.5oz.

The late year (can't say 'bout earlier in the yr, unless the earlier '06 batches of fabric were identical to my late yr '06) '06 Marmot Ion does NOT breath at all, IMO. So, my vote goes to the MB Peak jacket (which i also happen to own), but i use the p-zips on the Peak, so it's not a fair comparison. However, if the Marmot Ion truly doesn't breathe, as mine doesn't seem to, IMO, then even with p-zips closed, the MB Peak would get the nod. YMMV (but, IMO, i doubt that it will).
